A Pilgrimage to Plymouth

Thanks to the coaxing of my dear friend Dori (a true "adventure girl"), I packed up Emma and Abigail and headed for Plymouth, Massachusetts. There was a discount day for home schoolers at Plimoth Plantation, so that was excuse enough! We had a great time.

The day was drizzly at the start; the gray of the sky and the mist on the sea seemed a fitting backdrop for the drab colors at the plantation. The girls enjoyed interacting with the guides who were dressed in period costumes and were acting in character.

After lunch, the sky cleared nicely and we headed over to Plymouth Rock and to see the Mayflower II, a reproduction of the Mayflower that sailed to our fair land in 1620. It turns out that there may be more myth than reality surrounding the Plymouth Rock story, but we took a photo anyway!

The girls had enjoyed reading a book about the Mayflower before we went, and we even learned that we are directly descended from a family that tried to come to America on the Speedwell (the Mayflower's sister ship) in 1620, but wasn't able to come until 1629. By that time, the family had a nine year old daughter, so it was fun for the girls to imagine their long ago grandmother coming to this country in the bottom of a ship.
